to know can correlate more to a fact, person, or place. to know can also mean to be familliar with an area for example, i know los angeles. to understand correlates to concepts, ideas, and having a deeper comprehension of a topic, rather than just memorizing a fact.

I don’t see any special rule but sense given to these verbs.
You “know” of something or someone in the sense that you previously saw this thing, or saw or heard of or even met this person.
You “understand” a point of view or how works a machine in the sense that you have assimilated it intellectually, and, thenceforth, be capable of explaining it to someone else.
Two different things.

I’m not really sure what you mean. If you’re looking for a definition, try a dictionary. Or http://www.dictionary.com.
If you’re asking what the difference is, I think that “know” implies it’s talking about a fact, while “understand” refers to a concept.

“To know” means that you believe it to be absolutely correct.
“To understand” means that all knowledge you have would indicate that it’s correct but you’re not entirely sure.
