Hi Jimki, as a layman, I have no trouble understanding both sentences. Professionally, though, you may consider replacing the word ‘present’ to ‘current.’ Below is my version:

If current metal prices continue their sharp rise, the value of the copper in a penny will soon be greater than the face value of the coin.
