“I really think she’s cute; she has huge eyes.”
Semicolon is also used in lists where some of the items in the list need commas to be understood.
Colon goes where the earlier part is introducing the later part. Often the later part is not a full sentence.
“I know what you like: Muffins.”
Usage of these two is not very similar.
You use a semicolon to connect two phrases that can exist separately but are closely related. You never actually have to use semicolons; it’s more of a style choice. Parenthesis are used to signify an aside, or to share extra information without disrupting the flow the the sentence. You should try to avoid them in formal writing (though I think this is also a style choice.) Colons are used to connect a phrase that can be a sentence on its own and one that can’t. Often times, the second phrase is a list. So far we have discussed three forms of punctuation: semicolons, parenthesis, and colons. Dashes. Dashes. The way dashes were explained to me is that you use them whenever you’re not sure what kind of punctuation to use. That probably isn’t entirely correct, but you can use it in place of the other punctuation we’ve discussed. Watch. You never actually have to use semicolons–it’s more of a style choice. You should try to avoid them in formal writing–though I think this is also a style choice. So far we have discussed three forms of punctuation–semicolons, parenthesis, and colons. I hope this–rather informal–lesson helps! (Hahaha, Yahoo. “Hmm…it looks like you have a lot of punctuation.” No kidding.)
I wanted to participate in the race; however, there could only be one representative from our school.
Colons are used when you’re stating a list or example:
There were 5 people in the race: Matt, John, Mark, Luke, and Mary. (Always space twice after a colon.)
Semicolons can be used in lists when the listed articles contain commas within themselves:
In the photograph is my family. From left to right they are: my mother, Mary; Mark, my oldest brother; myself; my younger brother, Luke; and John, my father.
Hope this helps! (Oh. Colons are used in times too. =-) )
You can sit down and literally eat a 1,000-calorie dinner and yet be absolutely starving just a few hours later and the reason is simple: Because your body didnt get what it needed in those 1,000 calories so it sends signals to your brain telling you to ingest more calories and thus, the late-night cravings. That means that the surest way to end those late-night cravings and keep your weight loss goals on track is to eat a more balanced, nutritious diet that actually gives your body what it needs.
