Reflexive Pronoun Use?

When I do a grammar check (MSWord) on the following sentence, I get a “Reflexive Pronous Use” for the words “her own”:

“It was an image distorted not just by the effects of lighting and angle, but by her own perception.”

Should I ignore the warning and leave it? To me, the sentence doesn’t sound as effective with just “her perception”.

Thank you for any help!

Reflective pronouns reflect back and in fact your words “her own” are not reflective pronouns. I think what MS Word is trying to tell you is that you could use a reflective pronoun in place of “her own” if you so desire.

In English, the reflexive pronouns are myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, oneself, ourselves, yourselves, and themselves.

So basically it’s trying to get you to use “herself” instead of “my own”. In my opinion however, “my own” works better.

And I also agree that you could just leave it.

As an alternative, you could omit ‘her own’ altogether and say, “it was an image distorted not just by the effects of lighting and angle, but by perception as well” or something to that effect.

I would leave it as it is, and agree that “her own” sounds better than just “her”
