Mr. Clark walked into the room and immediately saw his not-to-be mistaken caricature on the chalkboard. His face flushed bright red as he looked for the eraser. It was not in its accustomed place; the artist was hiding it in his backpack. Mr. Clark angrily began erasing the drawing with his hand. With his back still to us, he took a long breath. As he turned, he ran his chalk-crusted hand up over his face. He now had a wide yellow stripe from his chin to the center of his displaced comb-over. He said, “Look at me. This is serious.”
We looked. We couldn’t be serious.
