Little help with text messaging phrases?

Okay, I’m not that old (25 to be exact) so why can’t I understand these text messgeing things? I mean is our society that lazy that you have to shorten up your phrases?? Is it just the teenie-boppers doing it or is it older people around my age too? Please, can someone give me definitions to these “bfn” “ttc” and other common texting phrases? I wanna be on the “in crowd” too!!!

I understand what you mean. It is quite difficult, but some people prefer to shorten everything to save time and money (in case they go over the limit of the message). But have no fear! I found the perfect site for you: http://www.lingo2word.com/index.php It translates everything you want to know.

Also, bfn=Bye For Now, ttc=Trying To Conceive

BFN, as state above, is bye for now but I’m not sure what TTC means. If it was TC, I would say it meant take care. I’m 32 and I do a lot of texting. I’ll shorten things up and abbreviate, but it depends upon what I’m texting and to whom I’m texting. If it’s someone who I know doesn’t have a lot of experience texting, I don’t usually shorten things up. But given that I only have 160 characters, there are times that I’ll shorten up words.

Edit – Jarrod – what’s wrong with someone over 20 sending texts? If I’m at work and I have no privacy, there’s nothing wrong with me being ‘old’ and doing it. I happen to be quite proficient with my texting and in the past week got worldwide attention (granted it was a puff piece) by winning a text competition plus a nice check which I received in the mail today. I don’t hang out in chat rooms, I don’t use T9, I spell out my words for the most part and when I do abbreviate it’s saying something like ‘bck’ instead of ‘back’ and I don’t think I’m ‘cool’ because I can text fast. Don’t judge.

Edit – Jarrod – I stand corrected. I did read your answer incorrectly. I was thinking that you were saying that adults shouldn’t text, you were saying they shouldn’t shorten words. Sorry to get defensive. I don’t use abbreviations such as ttyl, ttfn, etc.

People your age should not be doing it. I sure hope not anyways. I’m 20, I refuse to shorten words, and not only do I text over 3000 messages a month, I also hang out in chat rooms. Most cellphones support 7*160 characters. (though you have to be on the same network as the reciever). That really is alot of words. Teenagers do it with this false impression its ‘cool’ and ‘makes texting faster’. With all cellphones having the T9 function, texting actual words is just as fast.

Here is a site with all the common meanings.

BFN: by for now

The only one i couldnt find is ttc, I have never seen that one before, sorry πŸ™

I did notice that FTW is missing: For the Win

Edit: Beth, i didnt judge, i simply stated that no adult should be shortening text messages, there is no reason for it. This is a false belief that your makin your life easier, and in all reality your just making someone elses life harder. If you’re going to text, then text the whole word. the time it takes to type out talk to you later on a cell phone in T9 is just a millisecond longer than it is to type ttyl on abc

I also did point out that was was 20 sending over 3000 a month. I’m thinking you should reread my answer.

Edit: Beth it happens πŸ™‚

Talking sexy isn’t about what you say, it’s about how you say what you say. For instance, “that feels good”, can be said in a sultry whisper or a exciting scream and it will mean the same thing to most guys. However, say those same words sounding as if you can’t wait to ‘hit the fridge’, and it will kill any mood. Follow?

Here are a few sites:

Personally (and I’m only 15) I hate all of those abbreviations. I don’t text, and I type e-mails using complete sentences.
