Is There a formal name for the red circle with a line through it?
Is There a formal name for that red circle with the line through it. The no smoking thing? I’m trying to find it on google images, but I can’t think of a formal name that will just give me the sign itself without a cigarette or some such on it.

not that I know…and it’s not JUST for no smoking..any road or highway sign may have a circle with a line thru it. such as no admittance,no right of way I think that must be universal for NO.

It is commonly referred to as an “International” Prohibitory Sign. It means automatically “NO” and whatever is listed below the slash. It is specifically used due to the fact that there are many driver’s who do not read English, and so therefore it’s a universally used sign for tourists.
I enforce many signs in NYC, that have such a picture, and that is how its recognized by the State of New York’s Motor Vehicle Traffic Violations Bureau.

In a question sort of backwards from this one a while back, the questioner said they’re called “null… (ummm) …null sets,” I think; plus they indicated that the sign meant “nothing” could happen there. Well!
Anyway I imagine it’s different in different places.
Try “null set” and see; so will I. (the null set I got was mathematical). I think it is just called a no smoking sign, myself. ***Added: Oh, and I checked under ‘traffic signs’…and I think a cigarette was on the sign too… read on!
