it’s Greek
– I studied both Latin and Greek; I admit, many years ago, but I remember issues as this

(I add that it meta- has other meanings also)
– it is found in many words composed by greek root, not by latin ones: eg metamorphosis from meta- and morphé (=form, shape); metonymia from meta- and onyma (=names)
