Why is ‘his’ in inverted commas?

No part of a living room really belongs to any one person, so the inverted commas indicate that the word is used with tongue in cheek. He merely THINKS it is his.

Those are called apostrophes. They have many uses. In this situation, double-quotation marks would have been more appropriate.
