Assuming you are refering to calling someone with mental disabilities a retard, try standing up to the ones misusing the word. Name-calling is a form of bullying and most bullies only do it because they can. Face up to them.

Then let’s not go all P.C., either. The word retarded and the phrase developmentally disabled are each correct. “Otherwise abled” is a terrible misuse of the English language.

In the dictionary. The word retard means delay.

There’s a school for special education. People called it retarded school. The kids attended there were ages from six to sixteen. Their minds are not up to par their ages. Physically there perfectly normal.

When you call some one retard. That person cannot understand their situation or some thing.

If any body call me retard. I consider that an insult.

I don’t like the word retarded either. I went to a camp where we helped with people with disabilities, and that’s exactly what we called them. They are people before they ever have a disability, so we should treat them like people. If someone misuses the word around you, you can gently correct them and tell them a better word to use.

When people use the word “retard” in place of stupid, etc, look the person straight in the eye and say, “My aunt has down syndrom. I would really appreciate if you didn’t use the word retard that way”. It makes people around you a bit uncomfortable/guilty and they really watch what they say around in the future.

why? is it because you are offended by the implications and/or derogatory way this term isused? If so, you need to educate the ppl who use it so that they use it in the correct manner.
