Hun or hon?

When you’re trying to say “hey hun” (short for honey), should it be spelled with an o or a u?

Either one.

“Hon” is a simple shortening of the word, “hun” is a phonetic representation. Both styles of diminutives are common.

Since the Hun’s were pretty nasty guys – as in Attila the Hun – I would stick with Hon which is the diminutive of honey. Real sweet stuff.

I have seen it written as both– phonetically hun makes more sense– /h/ /u/ /n/. Hon would actually rhyme with on and is often the abbreviation for Honorable ( the Hon. Judge Whatshisname)

I think since it is a definite shorter version of “honey”, it should be spelled “Hon” and NOT “Hun” as in “Atilla the Hun”.

Is this a trick question? When you’re trying to SAY it, it shouldn’t be spelled at all. It should be pronounced. When you’re trying to WRITE it, then the spelling comes into question.
