How do I prove that I have no source of income?

I’m a university student who has only cosigned loans and some part time work (less than 1000 dollars this year) as income (which I don’t think counts). I don’t file tax returns, but my utility companies want some proof for their discounts.

Hmmm…tax returns are usually the proof. The utility companies should be able to tell you, in the absense of tax returns, what they will accept as proof.

Ask them if bank statements, W-4’s from your part time work, letters from the cosigners on your loans, or letters from your parents would suffice. No use in running around for documents they won’t accept.

You can provide a copy of your financial aid award letter. Obtain this from the financial aid department of your school.

You will also need your pay stubs or W-2 forms from your work.

You can get these if you lost them by talking to your employer.

They usually don’t like giving them to you but just do have them do it anyways.

The reason you need both your pay stubs and financial aid is because your income from work is so low. The financial aid document will show where you get your additional income for rent ect… and is typically not counted as real income so shouldn’t affect getting the discounts.

“Some part time work” means you have a source of income.

I would show the utility company your paycheck stubs, they prob have the same discounts for those who earn nothing just the same who earn very little.

pay stubs

it’s suspicious because nobody can really live on $1000 a year. so you kind of have to show how you actually paid rent, survived, ate, etc.
