which one of the two words would you use in this sentence
and is there much difference between the 2 words

“Purported” means that it was supposed, but “purported” usually means that it was an incorrect assumtion or implication.
“Reported” means that someone made a formal description of things, usually meaning that it was true rather than mere gossip.
I would use reported.

I would use ‘reported’ granted there was a prelude to that sentence of info about the victims and the crime(s) behind their deaths.
