it the same as saying ” don’t have a cow” it means don’t get upset over whatever it is that is going on, don’t go ballistic on me, don’t loose your cool, the answer to she’s having kittens is she needs to take a chill pill. … o.k I know I’m showing my age with these slang terms.

It is from “having kiniptions”. “Kiniptions” is an odd word so it gets dumbed down to “kittens”.
