From is not pronounced like “frum”?
I read a book called “Public Speaking” by Dale Carnegie. After each chapter there is a segment that lists common mispronounced words. And suprisingly “from” is one of them. It says it should not be pronounced “frum”, but rather the “o” should be pronounced like the o in “odd”. All this time I’ve been pronouncing it incorrectly…wow!.

Many words have multiple “accepted” pronouciations, “from” is one of them. The actual pronunciation is somewhere between the “frum” and “from” (with an “o” is in “odd”) you cite. However, depending on where in the U.S. or U.K. you’re “from”, you’ll pronounce it according to the vernacular of the region. The same is true of “route”, which is pronounced “root” and “rout”, depending on where you’re from. “Tomato” (ta-may-tow), (ta-ma-tow) or (tow-ma-tow) are both an “affectation” and, at times, regional pronunciations, but all are still considered “acceptable.” My advice is to pronounce “from” the way it’s pronounced by those around you and not worry about what a book tells you it “should” sound like. The book won’t have to endure the suffering you’ll go through if you suddenly start talking with what might appear a “superior affectation” (pseudo-intellectual) to those who’ve known you for a long time.
