The number one reason you use a comma is to break up a run on sentence so that it doesn’t keep going on and on and before you know it you have a very very very long sentence that has no pauses (rule number 2) for the reader to catch their breath and if you haven’t noticed this is what you would call a run on sentence with NO punctuation other then the period right about here.

to separate nouns, to separate incomplete sentences, to separate or introduce clauses, list of items, numerical listing, separate a different idea like ‘but’, and to link two different ideas together.
Ex. Without a doubt, I ran to her needs when she yelled ‘help.’
Ex. I like her, but I don’t think she likes me.
Ex. I like candy, cake, coke, and carrot.
Ex. 1,2, 3, 4
