“Park the car in Harvard’s yard.”

Keep saying it over and over pronouncing the ‘r’ sounds. Record yourself saying it if you have to. This way you find out what it is that makes you sound the way you do, ie the way your mouth shapes when you say certain words.

(An old friend of mine moved down to NC from Boston and we made her lose her Boston accent. Now she’s a southern belle like us, saying “y’all” and everything.)

It’s hard to lose your accent, but it helps to watch other people, so watch movies or TV where people don’t have a northern accent and notice the way they talk and mimick them.

It might depend on how much you practice with “R” words and how long you’ve had the accent. My Dad was from that area, and even though he lived in the southeast for over 40 years, he never totally lost his accent.

Go to school in New York. We’ll show ya how to lose that impediment! Say: “The BRONX RULES!!!” 100x.

Rent “My Fair Lady” (Rex Harrison). Check out how she loses her cockney accent (so boston southie) and you can too!

Elocution lessons or a specialist in accent reduction or whatever they call it. There are people who actually train people to lost a regional accent.

Often actors will take voice lessons that can help them to completely hide their normal accents and speech patterns. Most successful radio personalities have taken speaking lessons also. Just dedicate yourself to learning what is necessary for your future if you really plan to continue acting.

You should watch “My Fair Lady” and take notes. He has her speaking like a real lady by the end of that movie.

If you can’t fight it, learn to sing. No one sings with an accent if they sing right. Take that knowledge and run with it!
