“potato” contracts to “tater.”
the -er at the end is something you see happening occasionally in rhotic languages like American English. In some dialects, an “r” sound will appear when the right sounds are next to each other.

Tater is a slang word for potato, so your left out letters that the ‘ replaces are “po”. It is not a “proper” contraction, but that is as close as I can come to an intelligent answer

‘Potato’ contracts to ‘tater’….
Doesn’t ‘toddlers’ contract to ‘tots’?
