College question.?

Is it terrible to fail a class your first year in college? I studied and everything, but my teacher never gave us the right stuff to study for and the tests were always different than what she taught in class. I’m feeling really bad about the whole thing, but i know she’s going to fail me. Just wanted to know how this is going to hurt me in the future. (this was an elective class that has nothing to do with my major)

Hello,

I am a professor. First, don’t be so sure you will fail. Often things are graded on a curve and a passing grade may be much less than you presume. I teach thermodynamics and many more students are pleasantly surprised than disappointed.

Second, unless this is your chosen field of study (and even if it is) failing an exam does not make you a failure. I hold 3 chairs in a major university and I failed more than one exam. Ten years from now, you will not even remember this, you will have more important things to do.

Do your best…..it is all you can do. Because you care so much and try so much, it is a foregone conclusion that you will be a success (and contribute something to the world) wherever you are meant to do so.

So……smile, life is ahead and it will be rich for someone who cares and tries like you. I promise!!!!!!!

Failing a class is not the end of the world….it will dramatically affect your gpa however, and you will need nothing but A’s and B’s from this moment on to bring it back up….

I failed freshman English my first semester of college…..

Now I’m a second year Med-Student…

I must say…it seems as if you are placing the blame on the professor…. if you felt as if the instruction was inadequate preperation for the exams, you should have seeked help when this initially became an issue. She may have been able to provide tips on how to perform better….

10 years down the road, the F wont make or break your career…. but from this point on, your “screwd up in class” passes are all gone..

If you can’t possibly drop the class the best you can do is to retake it. Most universities will allow you to replace a grade by taking the same class over. They will denote on your transcript that that was the case. It will be bad but not as bad as you may intially fear. It will hurt your chances at competitve grad schools and competitive jobs but less competitive positions will hardly notice such a transgression.

Even some competitive positions will ovelook a replaced grade if the rest of your transcript is really good and you have good activities.

You’ll shoot your eye out!
You might pass! Because I was taking a math class that I didn’t think I was going to pass and I did! I was so proud of myself. Like I took the final and felt bad about the whole thing because I knew I wasn’t going to pass, I told my boy friend and my mom that I didn’t pass and then I checked my grade and I did! So you really never know whats going to happen. I’m a freshman too in college! Its pretty hard! But maybe don’t put yourself in such a hard class the first semester. Take pre-requists if possible. Ya know! Good luck!!!

If its not too late you can take a No Grade or Incomplete and finsih the class later with a different prof.

If you take the “F” it will affect any scholarship and GPA and will be on your transcripts forever.

I took an Incomplete then finished it the next semester with another prof and pulled out a great grade. The Incomplete goes away and the “F” disappears when the new grade shows up on transcripts

Calm down… one failed class will not ruin your life. Its just your first year and things have just started. I know some people who have failed a class in college and have still gotten great job opportunities. One F isnt going to make a difference as long as you keep your other grades up. Try hard and don’t worry, you will do fine, trust me.

Failing one class isn’t going mean you’re going to sleep in cardboard boxes the rest of your life. However, before the class ends, go see your coordinator and talk to her/him about what’s going on. You have options. Chances are this will hurt you more in the pocketbook than anywhere else.

You should have dropped it if you knew you were already having difficulties. An F is going to hurt your GPA. Try to get really good grades in your other classes, so it can keep your average up.

It’s not the end of the world, but it is a lot of money lost. Also, in the future, I would consider what I could have done better instead of blaming the professor.

That will also help you when you get a job.
