I popped upright in bed. 3) What kind of place WAS this? Glancing around, I noticed that there was IVY growing up my bedroom walls — and a peacock shrieking in the corner, tailfeathers spread wide.
OK, I was used to lucid dreaming. I do it all the time. And when I recognize that I am dreaming, I wake up in the real world. So, I’m dreaming. Wake up! Wake up!
Hmmm. Nothing. Oh, gosh, it just got WORSE. There is a tiny blue gremlin perched on my footboard, grinning at me!
“1) Do you believe in magic?”
No, nyet, nein, no way, no how, never. STOP IT! “They” usually don’t let these stupid lucid dreams go on THIS long.
Get up, throw open the window, inhale, grab my glass of water and splash it on my face. NOTHING. Sheesh — and there goes a unicorn prancing across the field outside — and I SWEAR that is a silver dragon (with a RIDER) sailing by overhead, doing loop-the-loops!
I hear a discrete knock on my door. Turning, I see — um — uh — a muscular man, clad in black velvet, sweeping off his feathered cap.
“Milady, your carriage awaits to take you to the prince!”
WELL! 4) I might as well go with the flow!
We continued our march. Days passed. Eternities passed. I ran out of water, yet still we walked. And walked. And walked. Finally, he stopped. The plainsman turned to me, his sand-colored tunic flaring about him, and said the first words that I heard in weeks. “Do you believe in magic?”
No, I don’t. What’s magic is that I’m still alive after this maniac expedition. “Yes, I do.” I hate you. I hate sand. I hate the desert. I hate the suns. All six of them. And as soon as you show me where a road is, I’m leaving. “I have always believed in magic.”
“Well, then, you have completed your first lesson. We shall begin on the second in the morning. For now, sleep.”
As appealing as that sounded, I didn’t even see how that was possible. The Multiple Suns were shining brightly. It was blistering hot. I was hungry, thirsty. And I know it sounds crazy, but I think I was too tired to sleep. I sat down in the sand anyway. I was asleep before I knew it.

“Wake up.” This from my instructor, oh ray of sunshine that he is. “Training begins now.” He had said “first thing in the morning,” but I had thought that he meant sunrise. Which would be hours from that point. Yay.
“What? I’m awake.” More or less. “You can get started whenever you want.”
“We begin now. Stand up.”
I complied. I staggered to my feet. “I’m ready.”
“First thing. What color is magic?”
What? What color is magic? I don’t know. It doesn’t exist, so clear maybe? The cavalla badge is red, but that has nothing to do with magic. “Is it blue?”
“No. It is purple.”
Purple? It couldn’t possible be purple! On second thought, it can be whatever color it wants. It doesn’t exist, anyway. “Okay. Purple. Got it.”
“Now channel your purple into your hands.” Huh? My purple to my hands? Sure, whatever. I tried it, to no avail. “No, like this.” My instructor moved a little. I felt a chill run up my spine. I copied his movement.
“Like this?” It was crazy. It felt like ants crawling in my veins. It wasn’t comfortable.
“Now release your purple into the sky.” He did something. The sand around his feet moved a little and it seemed to get a little warmer. But most importantly, what looked like a glowing artillery shell was flying into the sky.
I tried to do the same. I felt a wind blowing around my legs. It definately got warmer. And then… nothing. But now, I knew beyond doubt that magic was very real. Just when I thought I knwe everything about the world. What kind of place was this, really?
“You do well for your first try. We continue later.”
