“I Will Follow You Into The Dark”

U.S.Marshal Matt Dillon was in pursuit of Jess Colter, the outlaw who had left him and his girlfriend, Sunshine MacGillicutty, for dead. For the full episodes of this story:

Much to the concern and anger of Sunshine, he wouldn’t take her OR a posse with him. She had been twiddling her thumbs , waiting for his return or at least a wire. “(4) Will tomorrow never come ? Where ARE you, Matt?!” Then a light went on her head and she jumped up, and started gathering what she needed. “(3) What the heck am I doing here ?!”

Matt had a four day start on her. He could be anywhere. She had a strong feeling he was in the Topeka area. From his own accounts, Colter spent most of his time in that area.

She loaded her gun,checked her supplies, and took off. She had a feeling in the pit of her stomach that Matt was in trouble.

She was right. Matt had located Colter and it was within 4 miles of Topeka. To be more precise, Colter had located Matt. Having been tipped off that the tall lawman was hot on his trail, Colter had stayed put, just waiting for the opportunity to meet up with Matt….. one last time. At this very moment, he had Matt in his rifle site. He gently pulled the trigger. Matt fell from his horse, having been grazed on the side of his head.

Colter rode down to where Matt lay. He took his pistol ,tied his hands, and dragged him to his hideout:

When Matt awoke, he was bound to a chair,at the mercy of his prey.

Colter:”Dillon. Why the hell do you continue to dog me? Do you have a death wish?” He laughed as he tightened the rope on his feet.

Matt shook his head , trying to clear the cobwebs……”Colter, you coward. Untie me and let’s settle this like men.”

Colter:”I can’t outfight you, Dillon. You have twenty years on me. But I can out-fox you. If I am correct…..And I must tell you…I am seldom wrong…….. Your little lady will be along….It’s just a matter of time. Then,once I have both of you, I’ll finish the job. If I kill you now, she will hunt me to her dying day.; Best I wait and get the two love birds, together.”

Matt : You stinking ,miserable …. All you’ll get is me. Sunshine won’t be coming. She’s safe.” (To himself…..”(1) Why did I have to open my big mouth and tell her I didn’t want a posse with me? At least she’s not in this God forsaken mess.)

Colter:”You don’t honestly think she’s sitting around doing nothing , do you? I saw what she was made of. She’s a fighter…… Mmmmmm. What a waste.” Matt tried with all his might to break free.

Matt:”Just hearing you talk about her makes me sick. Shut up!”

Colter swung his fist and caught Matt in the jaw.

For two days,Sunshine searched for Matt. By the third day, she had found some tracks. She discovered a blood trail which led her to the cabin. She crept up to one of the windows. What she saw sickened her…. Matt, bloodied and bruised, tied to a chair.

She checked her pistol, gave the sign of the cross and stormed through the front door.

As he went for his gun, Sunshine yelled ,” Touch it and you are dead, you piece of scum.”

Colter:” I don’t think so.” He tried to grab Matt……..(((BANG))).

Colter stared at her anf fell to the ground.

She quickly untied Matt and helped him to his feet. She held him tightly.

Matt:”Thank God you never listen to me.” He smiled and held on to her. “You’re the best, baby(2) You’re just the best.”

Back at their farm, Matt convalesed while Sunshine took care of him.

Matt:”Sweetie. I’m getting antzy. I need to get up and get out. (5) A day in the life of me is becoming very boring.”

Sunshine:”Come with me tonight. I’m going to rehearse with The Dodge Boys. I wrote a song about you while you were gone.”

Matt smiled and held her in his arms……. “I’d be a goner without you, SunnyMac.”

Sunshine……..”Right back at you, baby.”

That night Matt sat next to his Sunshine as she sang him her new song……. (6)”I Will Follow You Into The Dark.”

Monika stood, trembling, seeking for an answer in the Sensei’s eyes. Was he simply asking her to say after classes to practice? Or was there something — else — behind his request? Her tongue froze, her brain seized.

Chuck grimaced. As Sensei of the tai chi class, he had a position and a level of decorum to uphold. “1. Why did I have to open my big mouth?” he thought. “And 3. What the heck am I doing here? Sheesh! I’m married, she’s married. This is just SO not right.”

Monica finally shook her head, sadly. “My apologies, Sensei, but I can not. My husband expects me home this evening; we have plans. So, if you will please begin the lessons, 6. I will follow you.”

The class proceeded as normal, each member progressing, being corrected, helped, as needed. Except for Monika. As always, her fluid motions seemed to be flawless, leaving him thunderstruck and in awe. Finally, the session was over. Chuck approached Monika once more.

“Please,” he inquired, “just one question before you leave. Why are you taking this course, anyway. You seem to already know all the forms and do them well. So why?”

“Sensei!” Monika “Oh, thank you, so much, but I’ve heard from many that 2. You’re just the best tai chi teacher there is, and I truly feel I have so much refinement still needed in my performing.”

Chuck considered, and saw his opportunity. “Well, working with this beginners class is really just slowing you down. Why don’t we arrange a more advanced class for you? Do you have any time free that might match my schedule? For example, tomorrow evening, I have several hours open, due to a cancellation in one of my karate classes.”

Monika’s eyes lit up. “Oh, yes, THAT would be great. I’d love to work on some more advanced techniques. Early tomorrow evening, then? About 6:00 OK, Sensei?”

Cheshire-smiling to himself, Chuck nodded agreement. After all the students streamed out, he closed down the dojo, turned off the lights and wandered out to the parking lot and home to his wife. Tossing and turning in his cold bed in the spare room, he lay awake most of the night. “4. Will tomorrow NEVER come?” he wondered.

In her own home, Monika sat, listless, tired, listening to another session of her husband’s endless, egocentric, “5. A day in the life of me” monologue. Sighing, she thought: “4. Will tomorrow NEVER come?”

Little Johnny had to write an essay for school entitled ” A day in the life of me.” He hated writing essays so he figured he could just make stuff up and butter up the teacher so he would get a good grade. The next day he went to class, handed the teacher an apple and told her ” You’re just the best Mrs. Pentel.”

“Well thank you Little Johnny. And since you are in such a good mood, why don’t you read your essay first.” She replied.

Why did I have to open my big mouth he thought.

“A day in the life of me,” he began to read. ” I found a leprechaun who said to come with ihm and I would get riches beyond my wildest dreams.”

“I will follow you”, I told the leprechaun. He led me into a dark forest where I began to think ” what the heck am I doing here?”

“Next thing I knew a gang of leprechauns jumped me and started to…” Before he could finish his sentence, the teacher interrupted.

“Johnny, you made that essay up. Now you will stay after school and write a new essay, on the topic of why lying is bad. Now go sit down and don’t say another word.”

As Johnny walked to his desk he thought to himself, “Will this horrible day never end. Will tomorrow never come.”

I kissed the Blarney Stone. But, before I did, I said,” Don’t you DARE pinch me!”. Then he took me into his car. He said,” You better strap yourself in, buckaroo.” Then we walked out and sat on a brick wall under the starry, starry night. He said,” I’ll catch you if you fall, sweetie.” All of a sudden, I heard,” Call 9-1-1! Call 9-1-1!” Sirens were blaring. Confetti covered the ground. Our romantic night was ruined! He drove me home, and when I came in, I saw a freaky poster of ME! I screamed,” That makes me look like a Wall-Eyed Pike, you know!!!” My snotty sister said,” Oh. Was that BEFORE or AFTER the aliens took you to their UFO?” I sighed. She had unraveled my ego too many times already. Group hug w/ her? Puh-leaze. Can you imagine that? “Okay…. It’s time for a group hug.” ugh.
