CUTE AS A BUTTON which means “cute, charming, attractive, almost always with the connotation of being small, 1868 (from the original 1731 English meaning of ‘acute’ or clever). Cute as a bug’s ear, 1930; cute as a bug in a rug, 1942; cute as a button, 1946. The expression usually refers to someone who is petite, SMALL and cute… since buttons are usually small, and often, to some, they look just as cute as can be! Nothing offensive about a button, and some can hardly resist picking one up, or fooling around with a button on their shirt, or whatever. Not to worry, it’s good!
