Attention English majors… What’s the difference between “incidents” and “incidences”?

It drives me insane when I see people use the word “incidences” because I always think it should be “incidents”… but maybe there’s truly a difference and it’s ME that needs some edumucating. 😉

Can someone in the know please shed some light on my issue? THANK YOU!

perhaps it would help to see “incidence” as an large-scale thing, unto itself, whereby “incidents” are related to smaller actions.

incidence – singular, on a large scale. “The incidence of crime has an effect on real estate, lowering the value of the properties.” (overall) The effect covers a range of individuals, even though they’ve yet to experience the “incident”, themselves.

incidents – multiple, results from other things, it is dependent on other actions. In singular, it is an incident. Like an accident/accidents, or occurence/occurences. “The recent rise in criminal incidents have increased the amount of “for sale” signs in the neighborhood, as well as,

the police presence.”(Individual)The affect felt by individuals and their response.

Raising taxes can be the same. There can be an incidence of increased taxes, which changes the tax laws, yet it’s incidental to some people, because it’s inapplicable.

Well you can never understand God if thats what you mean You can only think like a man – but God is on a much higher plane of existence Isa 55:8 ¶ For my thoughts [are] not your thoughts, neither [are] your ways my ways, saith the LORD. Isa 55:9 For [as] the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. And though uncertain in origin and certainly not found in Scripture (the phrase may originate from William Cowper’s hymn “God Moves in a Mysterious Way”), that God does work in ways curious and beyond the measure of our limited experience and conception is obvious. Deuteronomy 29:29 reminds us that: The secret things belong to the Lord our God. The final chapters of Job present God’s reprimand of Job wherein He asks how Job could possibly understand or judge the reasons for God’s actions (Job being so far removed from God in power, wisdom, and longevity). And perhaps the biggest mystery is revealed us in Romans 8:28. And we know that all thing work together for the good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose. Though we may not understand the purpose of our circumstances in God’s plan, we are assured that every detail will work for the benefit of the Redeemed.

Incidents ( noun- plural) is the plural form of the noun ‘incident’ which means something unusual or unpleasant happenings.

Eg: There are incidents of attacking the minorites in the region.

Incidence: (noun -singular)The extent to which something happens or something has an effect.

Eg: There is high incidence of Cholera in the area.

In short, ‘incidents; refer to the events / happenings, unusual or unpleasant & ‘Incidence’ is to what extent the spread or effect of the happenings are

Hope, it’s clear..
