will this help me get into a good college?

i’m a freshman at an international school in shanghai. but everything taught is american. i made varsity rugby and my parents think that after school sports are a complete waste of time because it doesn’t count as credits. i’m trying to tell them that being on a sports team will help me get into a good college, especially if i do the same sport for four years because that shows dedication. i have excellent grades and always get a+’s sometimes b+’s. there’s a huge tournament happening in hong kong and our team was selected to attend it. but my parents think that i’m justing going for the fun of it. i don’t think they understand how important being on varsity is seeing as neither one of them ever did sports in high school. so can someone help me think of something to say to them that will persuade them that being on the rugby team will help me get into a good college or help me think of something to say so that i can go to hong kong for the tournament?

If you are trying to get into an American university, then being involved in some extracurricular activities, whether sports or something else, can be important. It is only important, however, if your grades and test scores are excellent; no one will substitute your participation in sports for excellent academic work, but if both you and another person with identical grades and scores apply to the university, and you have rugby while the other person did nothing but study, you might have an edge.

I think your bigger argument for going to Hong Kong is not that it will help you get into a good college, but that you have a commitment to the team, and you would be letting the team down if you were not allowed to go.

Just bring them to one of your games and show them how dedicated you really are. If you show them that you do it for passion and not just for fun im pretty sure they will understand.
