It helps. They want people who are well rounded, so that stuff is good but doesn’t replace good grades.

No idea, but that’s actually getting on my nerves lately. In almost every application they ask for extracurricular activities, work and volunteer experience. I cant believe it’s not enough that we’re actually bursting our brains out with grades, and GPA, and test scores, and now this!! Is it just not enough to do community service? This year I’ve had to enroll in two clubs at school and I’ve spent like 30 dls on both, they’re always asking for something, and those meetings are just killing!

2, 3 hours, debating nonsense…

And still I think it’s not enough…

But well, you can combine a few clubs with a really good GPA, and outstanding test scores, in that way I believe any college would grant acceptance, although it also depends on the kind of college, what each one of them appreciate the most.

Depends on the college, if it’s a very competitive college then your chances decrease. I had none, no extracurricular or volunteer experience, and had no problem getting into the college I wanted. Since then I transferred once, and also had no troubles.

really depends on what school you are applying for, if you are thinking about the top 10 school then yes they are pretty picky about accepting students and you are not competitive enough if you don’t have those experiences.

However, in general you won’t get rejected b/c you don’t have those experiences. Although they prefer you have extracurricular/colunteer experience, it certainly is not a requirement. Schools look at other things in the application process (grades, personal statement and etc).

If all you’re going on is GPA then you don’t have much of a chance. Most people with 3.0s or higher are involved in some form of extracurriculars, whether it is acadmic or athletic in nature it doesn’t matter. But if you have a 3.5 and nothing else, they’ll take people with a 3.2 or 3.0 ahead of you if they are involved with 2 or more activities, because they are looking for people who want to get involved with the college and stay involved in the community and alumni functions after graduation.

It really depends. Some universities don’t care too much that you didn’t do anything except study (those tend to be the less competitive universities – those with low admissions standards re: GPA, test scores and etc.) Others care quite a bit (those tend to be the competitive and higher universities.)

For those that care, it depends on what you did with the time you would have spent on those things. For example, perhaps you had to work part-time in order to raise funds for college, so you couldn’t join clubs and etc. Or maybe you had to help your mother out at home with the other kids. Those things actually count as “extra curriculars”, and they are valid things to talk about on the application. Don’t discount them.

Most colleges have admissions standards that take in a variety of factors. So in many cases, a lack of extracurricular activities and volunteer cases will not be an automatic rejection, but it will decrease your overall score and likelyhood of gaining admission. With schools that are less competitive or state sponsored, this will not be as big of a deal.

Very genuinely. area of the clarification that the Duke of Edinburgh Award is so known with universities and employers is that interior the direction of the talents and volunteering edge of issues it shows that there is so plenty greater to you than purely grades. Being a member of golf equipment etc is nice, yet once you may grow to be in contact in a committee, which counts as volunteering, then that would at present impression college and employment. My female buddy, to illustrate, these days joined between the international’s best tutorial publishing companies. She did no longer get the interest because of the fact of her song diploma, every person else going for that place had a sort of to boot, it became because of the fact she became Secretary after which President of our college fencing club. Likewise, because of the fact I did some volunteer fencing preparation and held committee positions on 2 college societies, i began out working for a collection construction business enterprise on a similar time as at uni, the MD of which presented me to my modern employers.

No, Not necessarily, but take it from me, really, college is all about numbers more than extra-curricular so don’t go joining a ton of clubs and cheerleading + band, and sacrifice time studying for school because they are looking at how you do academically not if you can do a toe-touch 🙂

Depends on the school and how good your GPA is, but most very good schools would like a well-rounded person, which means good grades and activities, but sometimes having great grades can help those with few or no activities.

I’m not sure about your school but a friend of mine applied to nursing school with a 4.0 and didn’t get in b/c she hadn’t done any volunteer work. Better safe then sorry!
