IF you’re spending LESS than that amount of time then it is a piece of crap! Write on! Writers today use many drafts to improve their writing. The author of the “GREAT GATSBY” rewrote drafts up to 16 times! Which explains why the book has such vivid detail! If you NEED to shorten your time make an outline and then write, but I suggest making AT LEAST 5 drafts. You see, writing never has an end. Even final drafts can use 10 more drafts to make it better. Even people that make 10 drafts still have small errors! Writing is ever evolving, and people are jsut so used to turning in crap work, but honey that doesn’t fly in college. You’ll probably at LEAST get a B if your’e spending 5 hours on 4-5 paragraphs. This is a GOOD thing. Just keep writing drafts and take it to other people to edit. Good writers take a long time to write their essays and books. That’s what makes writing superb!

Hi, thanks for asking.

I don’t know if there are many reliable ‘tricks’ that will help you write an essay faster. Five hours is not really a long time, either. The quality and speed will improve as you keep practicing.

I don’t know, but maybe you are using an inefficient method of brainstorming, or you are not aggressive enough when you are writing. When you write, don’t think it has to be perfect the first time. Write everything that comes to mind, whether it makes sense or not. List things. Just fill up the paper with your thoughts. If you type slowly, write it with pen and paper first. The point is to have something to work from.

Then once you have written down all of your ideas, figure out what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of. Expand ideas and clarify them. Figure out what your best arguments are and make them into paragraphs.

Sometimes a thesis comes at the end of the essay writing process. You may need to write the body paragraphs first, then figure out what your thesis is.

Once you have solid points backed up by evidence, a thesis that explains what you are saying, and introductory and concluding paragraphs, THEN you revise and proofread. You may need to go do something else, then come back and start reading your paper over. When you see something that needs to be fixed, fix it.

Writing takes a long time. Don’t worry about it, just give yourself time! You’ll get faster as you get used to the process and keep doing it. In fact, you’ll invent your own shortcuts (that work only for you!) after a while.

May God bless you.

Depending on the length of the essay, 5 hours may not be bad at all. I can spend much more time than that, if I’m not on a time limit.

The most important thing about writing an essay, in my opinion, is knowing what your point is. What is your point? If you know where you’re going from the start, it’s easier to get there.

Good luck finding tutoring. It will feel wonderful once you get better at it ๐Ÿ™‚

I think you are very brave to attempt this in another language.

Most of us have trouble dealing with one language.

I did a Yahoo search on Essay writing tutorial.

The links below are for different levels.

Check at your school to see if there is an English or ESL writing lab where you can get help. It is better to try to get help on campus because the tutors there may know the instructors, their methods, and the lessons and can guide you better.

You don’t say what kind of mistakes you are making (e.g. spelling, punctuation, grammar, organizational, etc)

There is a free paper you can get as a PDF download from http://www.neighborhoodlink.com/public/clubextraPDF.html?nclubid=893282700&nid=320268571

Look in the PDF section of the green sidebar and get the paper titled “Numerical Outlining”. There are actually two papers in this file, so after you see it, look for the second paper about understanding paragraphs. This may help you improve the organizational structure of the paragraphs you write.

Do you use Microsoft Word to type your papers? If you do, try this.

1. type your essay in English using MSWord.

2. before using spell check to check the spelling of your essay, do the following

2a) click on the word “Tools” at the top bar of the MSWord page; this opens a drop down menu

2b) in the drop down menu, click on the word “options”; this will open a box with some things that look like filing folder tabs…

2c) click on the tab that says “Spelling & Grammar”; this opens another box of choices…

2d) in the bottom section under the blue label “Grammar”, click on the white box to the left of the words “Show readability statistics”…this will put a check mark in that box

2e) click on the button that says “OK”

This closes everything and you should see your typed essay again.

3) point and click to put the cursor at the start of your essay….

3a) click on the symbol with the for spell check to start the spell checking of your essay.

3b) when the spelling/grammar checking is done, a box opens up saying it finished…just click OK

3c) another box should open with the readability statistics….things like how many words are in the essay, etc.

3d) look at the section with the blue words “readability”…and look at the last line that says “Flesch-Kincaid Grade level…the number is the grade level of education in a US school a person needs in order to read and understand what you wrote.

Keep a record of the reading level and see if you can improve (the reading grade level should go up to about 12 or so). Then you can see your progress.

This is using some technology to help you learn how to improve your own writing AND to be your own best teacher.

I hope this helps you. Best wishes in your studies.

Sometimes we take the obvious things for granted. It is harder to express thoughts in a second language. There is also the culture difference and fear of embarrasment if you say it wrong.

You DO need to go to your school student office and ask if they have language tutor resources. Put it on your calendar to do. Be like the Nike company…’Just do it!’ Good luck!

because structure is hard! i hate essays. maybe you need a better way to diagram your thoughts. make them like a chart or something that’s short on words but big on visualization of whatever you are writing about
