The atmospheres at Auburn and Alabama are quite different, despite both being in the same state. Univ. Alabama is, relatively, a more metropolitan school — Tuscaloosa is a larger city than Auburn. Plus, Tuscaloosa is very near Birmingham. Both Birmingham and Tuscaloosa have large native populations of African-Americans. Lee County, where Auburn is located, is rural. Plus, the minority population from surrounding counties is from a more rural community, than Tuscaloosa and Jefferson (B’ham) counties. I think that the cultures and relationship of whites and minorities are fundamentally different. That does not mean that one school (or one area) is more or less racist. Auburn has a relatively small minority population, but I think that has more to do with location and perceptions associated with a “small” rural school atmosphere (Auburn is actually larger than Alabama). No school is “racist” as other posters have replied. To really know, you would need to talk to minority students, easily contacted through each universities’ website by emailing recognized minority organizations.

It is not the university it is the students and the staff. My experience, even the most progresssive sounding universities are racist. It is kind of strange, but the pattern emerges everywhere you go. Minorities generally come together, because white america will not let them become part of their little groups. It is not 100% in every or even most schools, but a good 50-80% in every freaking school. Not unusual racism is here to stay.
