An associates degree is basically a degree you recieve after completing 2 years of school in a community college. This is a good way to “try-out” college ’cause higher education is not for everyone. Or getting a AA or AS before your BA/BS you can save a good amount of money. After getting your AA/AS transfer to a 4 year college or university and they should waive all your “core” courses and maybe some of your Major courses as well. You should also come into the institution as a “junior” because you essentially completed 2 years of school in getting your Associates.

It’s basically a two year degree. Many jobs may require an associates degree so people take that program. Many people cannot afford a 4 year college, even a state school. They may not meet the reqirements even. So the community college with the assoc degree is the back door. It is usually cheaper per credit. They take almost anyone too. Most have a set-up with local colleges to take their grads and accept all of their credits. So it is a good option for many people.

The only people earning “Associate Degrees” are those who attend two years (or more) of community college.
Some high school students are also able to earn college credits before they graduate and might also manage to earn an AA.
It is not usual nor necessary before entering a university.
