I majored in Pre-Med and changed to an education major in my junior year. I was in pre-med for the wrong reasons—I was in it for my mother and for the money NOT me! It took much examination and honesty to determine what I enjoyed doing. I lost one year standing at Penn State but took double the courses and graduated one quarter later than my counterparts. I was also offered a teaching position where I student taught. Since graduating college, I taught elementary through graduate levels for last 30 years. I am presently a college professor and love what I do! My enthusasm for my students and my subject are high.

Examine what you love—your passion—and then just go for it! I can safely say that you never have to work a day in your life, if you love what you do. Take advantage of the interest inventories and other career exploration assessments available at your school. Check online information too. Also, interview someone in the marketing profession or set up an internship in marketing to see if that area interests you. Your education should be preparing you to learn and to use a variety of the skills you have learned up to this point. Every ‘job’ can be a part of your career….sometimes you may have to experience 2-3 jobs that help you build your career.

I wish you the best—use the resources at your college. You have paid for the college professor’s expertise and for the references/resources available to you. You will figure it all out! We never stop learning!

I majored in both music and theatre, went on to an MA in theatre and a PhD in communication, and now I’m a professor.

But that doesn’t help you; you’re not me.

Here’s what you should do. Get to the career development office of your college’s student services division. Let them advise you about careers–they have tests that will guide you to some options that will not only be financially rewarding but where you’ll actually enjoy doing the work. They also know how to get projected demand and salaries for different occupations, and (of course) what to major in to get to each career.

I was a mess, career-wise, until I got a good career counselor to help me sort things out like that. It takes a little time, but you’ve got a whole quarter to get it done.

I am presently working on my marketing degree. I love it. It is interesting and no matter what you need some kind of business. It is a good place to start. I started working at an advertising company and it is great. I basically meet with business owners and show them the two medias we have and generate new clients. Marketing is great also if you are into learning about purchasing, buying, advertising, public relations, etc. You can do so many things with the marketing degree and it truelly is not boring at all.

As a mentor for freshman students I often get asked what would be the best thing for them to do when they are unsure about their future. My advice is to go to your Career Center they usually have there tests (often called Discover tests) that help you determine majors and careers best suited for you based on your answers to the question. In my experience it has really been a help to students I have mentored. Hope this helps.

I majored in Political Science and Philosophy. A BA is OK, a MA is better and a PhD will land you a good professorship at any college.
