No state offers free college education. UNM charges about $5,000 for instate residents. UC Berkeley charges almost $7,000 for instate residents.

However, the University of Georgia offers free tuition scholarships to Georgia residents with a B average. There may be other programs like this nationwide but no state just hands out free college educations to everybody who attends a state school. This is not Germany or France.

There are plenty of scholarships available ranging from academic to athletic to military. There are also highly selective colleges like the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, Cooper Union, and Deep Springs that offer free tuition for every accepted applicant.

California used to offer “free” tuition to in-state residents, but that was a long time ago. Now, no state offers free tuition to its residents.

There are some schools which, if you can get in (and that’s a huge “if”, because these schools are highly competitive), it’s free:

The Cooper Union, in NYC

Olin College, in Massachusetts

The Curtis Institute, in Philadelphia

The Yale School of Music, in New Haven

Of course, CU only offers art, architecture and engineering. Olin is only engineering. Curtis and Yale are both music.

The military academies are also “free” – but I believe you need to be a resident of the US. So that’s West Point, the Coast Guard Academy, the US Naval Academy, etc.

The other option is to go any school that has a ROTC program. Then the military will pay for your studies – so long as you major in specific things, and join the military afterwards. But again, I believe you need to be a resident of the US.

Lastly, there are some fields which offer tuition forgiveness. You’d pay for your schooling up front, but would get reimbursed if you worked X number of years in the field, post-grad – but only in certain jobs that are part of the program. One example is nursing. A friend of mine did this – she signed up to work as a nurse (RN-BSN) in Appalacia through a special program.

Hi there, there is no simple answer because “free” college comes with circumstances. For example, people of Native American descent sometimes qualify for free tuition in certain states. Another example, some Louisana residents received tax credits for higher ed as a result of Hurricane Katrina.

So, you have to figure out what situtation you are in and then find out if your state offers scholarships for your situation. ***keep in mind*** almost all scholarships and “Free” tuition offers are competitive and based on GPA regardless of race, ethnicity, handicap, or socio-economic status.

You might also consider the Coast Guard Academy. It is free, it comes with a coast guard committment, but you do have to have good grades to get in.

You heard wrong. Nobody gives you anything for free.

That said, there ARE colleges to which you might earn a full-ride academic or athletic scholarship, and you would need to inquire at the particular institution. But other than that, no accredited university anywhere in the United States will grant you a degree without tuition.

Essentially, you get what you pay for.

I don’t think colleges will take a student in for free—not even for one student. If you attend college on a scholarship, then you are free of tuition and books fee, but that doesn’t mean the college is free.

georgia is free w/ b average. otherwise, nationally, there are a lot more restrictions.

you’d think everyone in georgia goes to college with that low of standards.

That sounds like a marketing rumour. There has to be some catch.
