1) An Intro to social work course – usually taken in the freshman year gives you an overview of the profession and how to think about social work.

2) usually two courses on Human Behavior – one that focuses on smaller systems (individuals and families – some times groups) and one on larger systems – groups, communities and organizations.

3) Anywhere from 2-3 method or practice classes that focus on the actual skills of working with people in those different systems just mentioned.

4) Anywhere from 2-3 field experiences. Some programs have a small field experience in the sophomore and junior years and all programs will have a major placement 400+ hours in the senior year.

5) Most programs will have one course on research and one on policy (some may have 2 in each area).

6) Most programs have prerequisites (Statistics and Human biology are common as is an ethnic studies).

You can look at actual course descriptions by going to the website of the school you are looking at. While the last poster presented their program, each school will be different. So it is best to go to that school and see what that program looks like.
