It isn’t really a good idea to limit yourself geographically. Beyond the Ivy League — the best programs are at large state universities. The public universities in the Northeast are not as good as those in the rest of the country.

The best English Literature programs have PhD programs, and only accept students to the PhD track. They give out a MA as a booby prize to those who are unable to finish.

The top three programs are Harvard, Berkeley and Yale. Two of them are in the Northeast. The best schools in the East are the obvious ones — the Ivy League schools. Beyond the Ivies, there are only a few really good programs in the Northeast — NYU, Rutgers and University of Maryland.

If you are willing to go South, then Virginia and Duke are good choices.
