What minor would best compliment my major?

I’m thinking of majoring in computer science. Which minor would best compliment my major? I’d prefer computer/business related minors. Also, I’m willing to have two minors if need be. What do you think?

While it doesn’t so much matter what your minor is, your minor can be helpful when it comes to studying for your classes needed for your major. At my college, all computer science majors automatically have a math minor because they are required to take a certain number of math courses for their major. So math would be a good option for you (especially when you think of discrete math, binary, linear algebra, etc). Business is also a good option… business administration, management, some colleges even offer business courses about how to incorporate computers into a business. Check out what your school has, meet professors, ask questions. Even if you don’t know these professors, go ask them questions. They should be willing to answer them. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to professors about my major and minor. “Hi you don’t know me but I have a question about this program you’re involved in…”

CS is a very dynamic major since you can pretty much work in any type of industry. So your minor can be in the industry you are interested in. For example, if you want to work in the telecommunications industry, your minor can be in EE. If you are interested in pharmaceutical or biomedical industry, you can minor in Bio or Chem. If you plan to start your own business someday or thinking about obtaining an MBA, a business minor is also an option. If you want to work for the government in the defense industry, maybe you can take international relations classes. In fact, I can’t think of any minor that does not fit well with CS because we use computers everywhere. Don’t just think that you want to work as a software engineer because even if you do, you have choices on the type of field.

It kind of depends on what you want to do after college. If you want to go into business or enter a business-related field, then a minor in business administration or accounting would be a good asset.

Honestly minors don’t mean anything. Jobs don’t really care what your minors are they are more interested in your experience. Don’t worry about it too much. Just figure out what classes you enjoy and towards your junior/senior year you can take classes you need to complete your minors.
