What major gives the best chance of being accepted into medical school?

I’m trying to decide between biochemistry and biomedical engineering. I’m thinking that biomedical engineering would look better on a med school application. I’m not even sure if I want to go to medical school, but if I do decide that I want to, I’d like to have the advantage of a desirable major.

Neither degree will get you a preference over the other. Med schools don’t give a preference based on the course of study, but on the performance in the prereqs, tests, essays, recommendations and overall GPA.

Both are not easy undergrad degrees and presumably, you have done enough research in each to consider them possibilities for your life’s work. You sound like you’re leaning toward biomed–if that’s what floats your boat, go for it! One should like what they do for a living.

You can pretty much major in anything as long as you take the classes required by the med school that you are applying to. If you wanna stand out biomedical engineering is a good way to stand out (biochemistry is still too common) you may also wanna look a biophysics it will definitely stand out on an application.

Most people who go to medical school major in biology, chemistry, or biochemistry. However you can major in anything you want to and go to medical school. Statistics show that your major has very little correlation with whether you get in or not:

This chart suggest that biochemistry and biomedical engineering both have a 46%acceptance rate. Do whichever one you like better. Alternatively, consider which one you would rather do if you don’t get into medical school.

Biomedical engineering is probably the toughest of the 2 types.

I would ask myself, what if I don;t get into med school, which major is the best for me for a Plan B.
