I agree with everything the first answerer said. In some instances you can get the Ph.D. without getting a masters degree. Both of my sisters completed doctoral degrees without a masters (one in organic chemistry, the other in molecular biology) so it can be done if your undergrad degree is in the same basic area of study as the Ph.D. My sisters took 3-4 years to complete their studies.

Ph.D stands for doctor of philosophy, but it does not mean that person has a degree in the major Philosophy. It just simply means that person has the highest degree of knowledge/schooling that is awarded to someone who has obtained a degree in any major during graduate studies.

A four year degree (the one you obtain in undergraduate schooling- right after high school) is called a bachelors degree. Next is a masters degree (which you take in graduate school) and this can take between 2-3 years, depending on the program. A Ph.D is the final step in graduate schooling and this can take 2-4 years depending on the program and the ambition of the student. In general, if you are considering a major that requires you to get a Ph.D before you are really able to be hired (psychologist, for example), you can expect to be in college for 8-10 years in total (undergrad, masters, Ph.D).
