What does it take to become a criminologist?

I am an incoming freshman at Univeristy of California: San Diego, but I am an Aerospace Engineering Major, which I am seriously contemplating on whether or not I should take that major. I am interested in Criminology, but UC San Diego only offer sociology and psycology as majors. My question is how do I become a Criminologist, and is it possible to take sociology and/or psycology and still become a criminologist. If someone is a criminologist, or knows a great deal about criminology, please contact me at [email protected], I would really appreciate it.

You can become a criminologist with a sociology major. Not going to be easy though. Crimininology is a combo of sociology and criminology. You’re going to need a PhD though. Having a masters likely won’t cut it much.

The main reason is there just aren’t that many jobs and positions for it. It’s a bit of a niche field in academia. It’ll be tough for a sociology major in the sense that there are many schools with Criminology degrees (UCI has a top rated dept with a couple of really famous criminologists as professors). That said, you might find it easier to get a grant as a sociologist and then once you build up a name, you can switch your focus to crime and technically become a criminologist. It’s really just a name of someone who studies crime.

You will need a masters to become a Criminologist. Sociology is close enough to Criminal Justice, so you should take that as your undergrad.
