What Does a University President Do?

What does a University President actually do? What are her daily roles as President as well as long term goals? What is the President looking to accomplish? Also, how does the role of the President of a Public University differ to the role of a President of a Private University?

University presidents do a lot! They are CEOs, politicians, administrators, cheerleaders, public relations representatives, and educated professionals in the field of higher education. Here’s just a bit of what they do.

They oversee the university administration, and report to the Board of Trustees on the state of the university. This includes financial reports and projections, enrollment reports and projections, evaluations and recommendations for facility and infrastructure repairs and improvements, projects to measure student learning outcomes, diversity goals, etc. Basically, they are in charge of implementing the mission statement of the university, and of designing and promoting their “vision” of ways to move toward university expansion, improvement, and financial solvency.

Deans, Provosts, and other administrative officials implement the President’s plans, and report to her/him on progress.

The President also provides information to her/his administrators and faculty about changes in university policy, and plans for upcoming projects.

Presidents also create and maintain relationships with potential donors. They are the “face” of the university in negotiations with foundations and persons who are in a position to support the university’s planned projects.

They also represent the university at conferences of higher education professionals at both regional and national levels. They look for ways to promote the university, and they create and maintain relationships with foundations and legislators. They host visiting dignitaries.

Public university presidents lobby state elected officials for continued or improved funding.

Private university presidents court alumni and corporate donors.

This is not an exhaustive list, but it is a general overview. I hope it helps!
