Yes. Right or wrong, as an employer, I look down upon what I will label the “trade school” or “internet” MBAs. I had a temp come to work for me once in a Temp-to-Hire situation. He had an online MBA from the University of Phoenix. I am not saying all U-Phoenix grads are not good. But this particular guy was dumber than dirt and that was a consensus among me and the professionals in my department.

The value of the degree depends very much on the source of the degree. Some schools have a better reputation than others and some have an incredibly poor reputation.

It is always best to study at the very best university that you can. If the best you can get in is DeVry or UoP then that’s better than nothing – but, if you can get into a better program, the value will be much higher.

Interestingly, it’s often the case that your State U is less expensive than some of those lesser reputed colleges. Compare the prices at University of Phoenix vs YourState U. and you may be really surprised. You pay less for a better reputation.

Keep in mind though that this is a never-ending game. People with a Harvard MBA will tell you that those people with an MBA from State U are “dumb as dirt”. I suspect that the people from Oxford consider themselves to be above those from Harvard… it goes on and on.

Bottom line – attend the best reputed school that you can.

Do NOT get an MBA from a For Profit university like Devry. It will not be respected. It will also be much more expensive than getting it from a public university.

MBAs are one of the degrees where the quality of the program is extremeley important. If you are good enough to get into a ranked MBA program — do that. Their graduates are in demand and can greatly improve their salary.

If you are not able to get into a ranked program — then the MBA may help you get ahead in your current position, but is unlikely to help you get a new job in a prestigious company at a higher salary. Any bump in salary you get will probably not pay for the cost of the degree. If this is your situation, then my advice is to get an MBA at the local public university.

Online universities can be really helpful because you can work and study part-time basically so you’re much more flexible! There are indeed some so called “profit” universities but also some great ones with accredited and legitimate classes where you actually learn & study for your degree.

You can check out some of these at http://thetop10onlinecolleges.com/rankings/ if you are interested. Best wishes! πŸ™‚
