I think it all depends upon the place you get your online degree from. Everybody has heard of the University of Phoenix, it’s a great place, fully accredited, but I think the UoP has become a causality of it’s own success. Employers who don’t know better don’t think UoP is a real college so that can really hurt you.

Many colleges and universities are offering degrees you can do totally online. Penn State’s World Campus is a great example of that. When you receive your degree from them it says, “The Pennsylvania State University”, it doesn’t have an asterisk.

Whatever you do, stay away from the schools which say you can get your Bachelors degree in 18 months, I wouldn’t trust them AT ALL.

If you really have no other choice but to go online, I think it can be worth it, so long as you go to a school that’s also a highly reputable brick and mortar university. But in general, most employers in the US strongly prefer hiring people who’ve gone to on-campus programs, especially if you are going there for an actual degree. Some employers completely refuse to even look at candidates who’ve gone to certain known-online schools, such as University of Phoenix, Devry, ITT, Kaplan, Strayer, AIU, etc. So, if you must go online – if you physically can not step foot on a campus – then at least look at online programs from reputable schools. I’ll give a few examples of good schools with solid online programs, below:

-UMass Amherst

-U Maryland

-Ball State

-U Nebraska

-Carnegie Mellon

-Rensselaer Polytechnic

-Babson

-Worcester Polytechnic

-Penn State

I researched some online schools for my upcoming third degree (the fun one as I like to call it) and I was so surprised to see just how expensive these schools are. I’m talking minimum $500 per hour. One online university that I found the physics major for was charging $800 per hour. I kept asking myself why they are so expensive, especially considering that there’s very few overhead costs associated with them (i.e. no class space, lighting, parking, basic utilities and so forth that usually come with standard physical universities). Although there’s great flexibility in having an online college, these costs just seemed too ridiculously high to further consider that option. Plus there seems to be a growing discreditation associated with online only colleges, one that doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon.

I really would avoid it if you can. Sure, if it’s your only choice, go ahead, but if you have the option of going to a real college, do that instead. I’m only in high school, but I had to take two classes online this summer to catch up. It takes up so much time, teachers are hard to contact, it takes them forever to receive/grade your work, and technical problems are frequent.

Again, if it’s your only choice, (as it is mine) go ahead, but real school is a lot more fun and time-efficient.
