What do you think about a liberal arts education?
Favorite Answer
On a side note I have several friends who graduated with liberal arts degrees and achieved mixed successes. One is currently in her Ph.D program since she is going to be a professor. Things look very upbeat for her. The other (a graduate of “Interdisciplinary Studies”) found a job with the Education Board Budget Deparment. Not exactly something she had set out for though. I wish counselors would stress to students the realities of some of their degrees, how some have an instant demand out there (like engineering, accounting, Finance), while others have demands too but it’ll take more dedication to get what you want.
I got my BA in Political Science/S.Asian studies with the intention of teaching the social Sciences. However, I have found that if this were not the case—my University degree would be of very little *practical* use to me. The vast majority of Liberal Arts majors like myself who have decided not to go on have found themselves working in human resources, customer service and other fields that they probably did not envision themselves in nor particularly like 🙁
If you want to get a BA in a “soft subject” like Women’s Studies or Political Science do—but you may also want to pair it with something that will make you a bit more marketable.
