What do I tell the professor for letting my friend snatch some ideas from my essay? (playgarism)?

Prof, might get us in terrible trouble, maybe kicked out of school for a year or just her class and if im lucky just a warning. So i let my friend take some pieces of my essay, change it up but conveying the same idea and put it in his essay, prof finds out due to turnitin.com, leaves us in suspense by saying, why shouldn’t I report you guys? says we’ll talk about it on friday. I didn’t intentionally let him copy my paper he didnt kno APA format couldnt understand it on the internet so i just sent him my paper and said dont copy it please, and if you do you know be smart enough to change it up. My friend took full responsibility for his actions and straight up told the teacher im sorry as well as i take full responsibility please don’t bring him down he told the absolute truth. the teacher has a firm stand on playgarism and it doesn’t seem like i can salvage this the best i can get is kicked out of class. what should i tell her to get this or even better just a warning for only myself

Explain exactly what happened.

Apologize for your mistake and assure her that you’ve learned not to share your work, even with friends you trust. Although it’s not the case here, sometimes ideas even get borrowed accidentally (they read it, then later have an idea that they forget they saw in your paper). You never know.

What is kind of troubling about what you say is the part where you say, “but if you do copy, change it up.” Can’t tell from your statement to what extent you’re aware of this, but plagiarism isn’t just in cases where entire sentences and paragraphs are copied word for word. “Changing it up” with the help of a thesaurus and some rearranging is still plagiarism! Any material that’s not your own ideas–whether words, not-so-commonly known facts, or paraphrased ideas–can’t be used unless they are properly cited, and even then most of the paper should be your thoughts, not cited material. Rewording, translating, rearranging, summarizing, etc. are not enough to safeguard you from plagiarism. Of course citing a friend’s paper as a source is a little strange, so you’re best off avoiding reading each other’s work at least until you’ve all actually finished writing.

You might also read your school’s honor code about plagiarism. Tell your professor you’re doing so, and ask her a few questions about anything in there that you don’t understand or situations where you’re not sure if it constitutes plagiarism or not. It’s something you need to know to avoid future problems, and your professor will be glad to see that you are taking steps to inform yourself so it doesn’t happen again.

Definitely not, I have friends of different types and prefer some to be kept totally away from the others, don’t want all muggled up, if a friend says you can’t be friends with them then reckon their overstepping the mark. I know some friends would not get on so extra leave distance between them but if both groups are gonna be at an occasion like a party I invite both and let them decide if it is an issue. Its my life.

If your friend has already admitted they plagarized your paper despite your request that they refrain from doing so, and they still did so without your knowledge, then you’re an innocent party. You gave them your paper in the expectation that it would be used as a demonstration of format. Your friend took full responsibilty, and if the professor tries to kick you out of the class, then you can appeal the decision. You are not responsible for his actions, and he has admitted as much. Therefore, the professor doesn’t have the grounds to kick you out.

It looks to me like the best thing to do is just tell the truth.
