You should get your Bachelors in Graphic Design with a minor in Marketing or Communications. This will give you strong skills in the kind of art advertising companies want and the Marketing background will give you an understanding of the objectives of an advertising company. Some schools have Graphic Design as a separate major while others have it as an emphasis under the Art Major.
When you are in college, look for student work opportunities that let you design as part of your work/study. The Admissions office or the Alumni Affairs office may have such opportunities. Also, work on your school’s newspaper in the design department. Both of these allow you to build a portfolio before you graduate.
Between your Junior and Senior year you should try to arrange an internship at your ideal agency. This will allow you to meet people who will be making the hiring decisions.
