What college?

Hey guys, I’m currently a senior in high school and am planning for my future after I graduate. My average GPA for all four years is around 3.1 and I havn’t taken the SAT yet but I’m going to on October 6th and again on November 4th. The colleges I’m looking at are some of the UC schools and CSU schools. I know that overall UC schools are more difficult to get into and have a better rep, but Cal State schools are cheaper and wouldn’t require as much. I really don’t know where to go. After doing some research it seems the only UC schools I might be able to get into are UC Riverside and UC Merced but I don’t know if I really want to go there. I was thinking more along the lines of Cal State Fullerton or another Cal State school. What do you guys think? Any input will be appreciated. Thanks!

It’s very important to visit the colleges you are considering. You’ll learn a lot about the school by being there. You should also consider what your interests are in and out of the classroom and find a school that fits. It’s not the name of the school that matters but how it matches up with you, your skills and your interests. Of course, your GPA and test scores will determine which school will admit you, but there are many quality schools and you need to research more than admission standards to find the right one.

Go with a UC. It may save you money to go to a Cal State or a CC for the first two years, but you won’t have the same experience. Between Riverside & Merced I would go with Riverside. Merced is too new at the moment & campus life would be lacking at best. UC Riverside is consistently moving higher up in the rankings & is an amazing research campus.

If you can, push yourself to attend the most academically rigorous university you can possibly afford. Consider it a message to the world about how you approach life – do you take the path of least resistance and do only the minimum required, or do you push yourself to excel and explore your potential?

Keep in mind there are many financial aid and scholarship opportunities at all public schools.

why don’t you go to community college for a year and work really hard and get your GPA up and then transfer to Cal State Fullerton?
