There is absolutely NO limitation on what you can major in before applying to medical school. The most common two majors are still biology and chemistry, and if those are your interests, that’s great, but there is no requirement whatsoever.

The prerequisites for med school are: One year of English, one year each of biology, chemistry, organic chemistry and physics with their accompanying labs, and usually one year of college-level math, preferably calculus. Some individual schools do have some other, extra requirements, but these are required by all of them. (You should check into med schools you think you might be interested in to see if they have any special requirements.) You will also have to take the MCAT.

As long as you do well in these basic courses, it doesn’t matter at all what your actual major is. They will teach you all the basic science you can handle in med school. It is MUCH more important that you major in something that you are interested in and that you enjoy that it is to pick something that you think the med school wants.

Med schools are looking for people that will make good doctors. Showing your ability in basic science is part of that, but so is showing that you are a well-rounded candidate who has many interests. I honestly think they are more likely to be intrigued by a philosophy or arts major, if anything, than by yet another biology major.

Most colleges don’t offer a pre-med major, so most people major in either biology or chemistry. When I was pre-med, I was majoring in psychology and neuroscience. I had a friend who is in medical school who was studying biology and anthropology. Really, you could major in anything. It’s just that medical schools generally require you to take a course in calculus, biology, chemistry (organic and general chemistry) and physics before they accept you. So you could study anything and just make sure you take those courses, and you’d be fine…however, just realize most people in medical school will have had way more science courses than just those.

Biology or Chemistry, I had a friend that majored in mechanical engineering, but he had to take a number of bio and chem classes before he started medical school.

Most students major in bio because the requirements coincides with the premed requirements. However, you can major in anything you want just make sure you got those requirements taken cared of. Also you will need to take the MCAT.

i’m now no longer sure approximately the GED/SAT/FSU ingredient of your question, yet whilst FSU would not, diverse faculties will settle for scholars alongside that direction. the complication-unfastened GPA of scholars authorised into med training is around a three.7 (each total, and their technological understand-how gpa, in line with the AAMC 2008 stats). yet you even have have been given to score reliable on the MCAT, have extracurriculars, scientific volunteering enjoy, etc. etc. as quickly as you initiate college information on doing reliable in all your categories, and particularly on sorting out the textile reliable in all your premed categories (the MCAT tests all of this fabric). reliable achievement!
