What are some reasons why colleges would remove a major?

What are some reasons why colleges/universities remove majors from their programs? Recently, two colleges I liked removed their Fashion Merchandising programs. Weird.

1) there are not enough emrollees to justify a class

2) the demand is low, the cost will be high to continue it

3) they suddenly need state certification that they dont have yet

4) they renamed it or just adopted it in another course as a subject

5) ask the school – they know what the best answer is

Cost is the major factor-

Professors do not come cheap and in that field, professors aren’t likely to stay around.

To have a professor in any arts background stay at a University longer than 4 semesters is amazing for the most part. By nature, Artists “free will” type living doesn’t allow them to settle in one place.

In turn, the University must act, then re-act to keep professors in place to keep a solid program. In some cases, there may be a major factor keeping some professors in one spot such as a very famous professor residing at the particular school. Sometimes it is cheaper to scrap a program rather than keep it on.

Even outside of the arts, it is very typical to hear of a department turning over once a famous person leaves the university in any major.

Think about it – you wouldn’t take guff from just anyone – I bet you’d be willing to take guff from Ralph Lauren if he was your teacher.

Check if they removed the courses, or just removed the major.

They may have found that students with a major in business or marketing, and the fashion courses were doing better in the job market than students in the actual fashion marketing major. To be honest, that sounds like way too specific a major to do as an undergraduate.
