If you were in special education in high school does that mean you can’t do college …or get into a university ???? My cousin was in special education and then in the end of her years she was in normal classes????? does this mean she can’t go on with her education??? or what??? please help!!! thanks! anybody can do it as long as you put your mind in to it right?????

That depends. Most school districts offer several different kinds of high school diplomas. Some of those diplomas qualify you for college entry, some don’t.
Your cousin should check with her guidance counselors to see which diploma she’s on track to receive.
Even if she’s on track to receive a special diploma, she can still go to college if she gets a GED and takes the SAT (if required by the college of her choice.)

I was in special education classes when I graduated from high school back in 1988; however, I graduated with an Associates Degree with a 3.82 GPA. I’m an active member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and made the 2007 National Dean’s List. I’m currently earning dual Bachelor Degrees in Computer and Electrical Engineering. I might even surprise myself and try to earn my Master’s Degree.
Being disabled, learning or otherwise, does not mean that your cousin is unable. I wish your cousin good luck!

She’ll need to take college entrance exams. An ACT if a 4-yr school, 2-yr schools usually have their own exams. Her performance on these will dictate her ability to continue. Even if her performance is weak, she will still be able to take some developmental classes to improve her skills to a level where she could eventually take college courses.
I work at a college and we have a lot of non-special ed students in developmental classes. There are just some high schools not preparing their students well enough.

That will show up on your high school transcript and certainly Ivy League colleges aren’t going to be happy if they see that. However, you can still go to any ordinary state university, and many of the freshmen nowadays enroll in remedial courses their first year in order to get caught up on high school courses.

Most colleges go soley on standardized test score, but sometimes they make exceptions. But realistically, if she can pay for her classes, most likely they will let her in. Different colleges have different standards, so she should go to the web sites for the various colleges and see what their requirements are.

If she’s in normal class now, it doesn’t matter. As long as she meet the GPA minimum for the post-secondary education facility she wants to apply to. Congratz to hear she got that far! And tell her to keep up her efforts. perseverance and determination are always willing to provide for you.

Of course she can go to college. She may not take a full load, but so what if it takes her an extra year. She will still get a piece of paper, that says she is smart.

Heck yes! If your cousin’s grades are acceptable to a university, she will be able to go. She may be required to attend some developmental classes, but there is no reason she can’t go if she wants to.
