University of Phoenix?
A fraud case against the nation’s largest for-profit school will be allowed to continue, a federal judge ruled Monday. The lawsuit, filed under the federal False Claims Act, accuses the University of Phoenix of violating federal rules by offering employees incentives based on the number of students they enrolled. District Judge Garland E. Burrell rejected the university’s contention that a $9.8 million settlement with the federal government should end the lawsuit. Henry Weinstein, LA Times 08/21/2007

I wanted to add my $.02 about the quality of the school however.
I’ve been there for about a year working on my B.S. Prior to that, I attended a “brick and mortar” school. There really is no difference between the two.
UoP is known as a “for profit” school…but lets be honest, what school isn’t for profit? All schools are a business and trying to make money. There is always someone that is profiting at the school.
As far as coursework, it’s like any other school, you get what you put in. You could do the minimum and pass, or you can bust your ***. In either school you will learn if you choose to.
The only thing lacking from the school is social interaction. UoP has “learning teams” that try to mimic the interaction you would have at a normal school. It’s not bad, but it just isn’t as good. Without the learning team, i would probably just do my own work and not bother with others.
As far as in the real world, i don’t know how employers view a degree from UoP. Here’s a scenario. My friend has his masters from a standard school. I am working on my 4-year degree….i’m the one working at a corporate job while he is doing some crappy tele-sales job. The only thing my current employer asked about my schooling was when i was going to graduate.
If you have the time to go to a normal school, do it. The networking aspect is well worth it. If you don’t have time (like me), go to an online school
