France got the territories on its german frontier way after the thirty years war (circa 1648) during the reign of Louis XIV. To be more precise, they got it after/during the War of Spanish Succession.
The frontiers with spain had been the same for many, many years, (its way up in the mountains). To find that information you probably have to go back to the 1400-1500’s.

The correct answer is: Peace Of Westphalia, which was the series of treaties signed to bring about European peace after the War of Spanish Succession. France was lucky to gain territory, the Hapsburgs had to recognize total independence of all the princes of The Holy Roman Empire. They lost a lot.
