Here’s a case of “it all depends”.

Each college or university can and does set its own rules about where freshmen live. The pluses are being convenient to a classroom for an 8 o’clock class or to “home” after long hours at the library, having other freshmen dorm mates experiencing much of what you’re experiencing (misery or joy is better with company), easily meeting new people, and not having to deal with furnishing an off-campus place. The negatives of dorm living, besides what your cousin is putting up with, can be noise, isolation, little individuality in surroundings, and (sometimes) costs if there’s no kitchen, for example, or the place is so depressing that all waking hours are spent someplace else!

It’s worth asking BEFORE you register, and, if you can, go see the freshmen dorm for yourself. If it IS required, then ask an upperclassman how they survived.

depends on the school. it was mandatory at my school and i lived in the dorm for my first year, but you could also get your parents to send a letter saying you’re living at home. I know many people who had their parents do that and then just got an apartment.

dorms aren’t always that way either. my dorm was older, but nice, had it’s own AC unit and a pretty wide window. schools usually have a lot of “meet our campus!” events before the start of a new school year and campus tours at any time where you can see the dorms.

It depends on the college.

Some schools require Freshmen who do not live locally (with their families) to live in the dorms. Many times these Freshmen dorms are some of the oldest on campus and might be without AC or other amenities. Sometimes the more you are willing to pay, the nicer your dorm will be.

For most places it is mandatory and for a lot of other school to go to the school all four years you have to live on campus in the dorms. It sucks but that’s how they make their money and why they built the buildings. Statistics supposibly show that students who lived on campus were mre involved with school activities, had better grades, and were more likely to come back and attend for the following semesters when compared to students who lived off campus. I’m sure it’s all true to a point but it’s all over exagerated.

It depends on the school. It is not a mandatory across the board thing. Individual schools have different requirements.

I lived in the dorm my freshman year. It was air-conditioned. Our rooms were large enough. Four of us shared suite, with a common entry with a bath, and two bedrooms.

Most colleges require that all freshmen live in the dorms their first year, some require more than one year. So if she says it’s mandatory it probably is at her school.

Some colleges require it and some don’t. There is research evidence to show that students who live in the dorms get better grades, become more involved, and graduate at higher rates than those who don’t.

Depends on the school. Most require it, but some let you out of it if you live close by.

Some colleges require it and most recommend it.
