Time Management for college student.?

Starting Monday, I am a full-time student, work 15 hours a week, and need to lose 50 lbs. My goals are to have at least a 3.5 gpa and lose 50lbs in the next 9 months. Any tips? I.e. How much should I study and workout. Any diet tips?

Eat a balanced diet, don’t deprive yourself of your favorite “fat goodies”, just eat lots less – like one or two cookies a day. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables – they fill you up AND they are good for you. Drink those 8 glasses of water every day and sneak an extra glass in when you really gotta have that chocolate. It also helps to have cut up vegetables in the frig for snacking and don’t buy empty calorie things like chips, ding dongs, etc. It helps if you don’t get hungry so try eating 6 small meals a day, that way you are always “full” and less likely to eat those fat monsters.

Work out an hour a day, alternating cardio and weights. Eat less, more more is the key to losing weight – I’m not sure 50 pounds in 9 months is healthy, depends on your current weight and age (easier to lose when you are younger).

For every hour you spend in the classroom, plan on at least 3 hours of study time at home. You may not have much time left over for a social life, but maybe you can hook up with someone at the gym trying to do the same things you are – get into shape, lose weight and maintain a good GPA – all three are easier to do if you have a buddy to do them with!

Good luck to you!

Drink only skim milk and water. Avoid coffee and diet soda except upon occasion (these drinks lead to increased eating behaviours)

Get a sugar free mints and ice water to help stimulate your brain while you study. DO NOT SNACK AND STUDY, make it your rule.

Get a little fridge and fill with carrots and celery and bottled water. Don’t let yourself get hungry.

Plan each hour of each day, and stick to the plan. Workout 30 minutes a day, just by brisk walking, then use hand weights and do crunches for 15 minutes. Don’t waste time dressing, showering, and going to the gym.

Go to bed on time.

The brain holds onto things you review right before sleeping. Review the day’s work right before sleeping, then stretch, relax, and get into the bedtime ritual.

Set your goal to lose only one pound a week.

Don’t stress

Good luck

It is good to have goals. But don’t kill yourself in the prime of your life. My suggestions to you are..

1. Have fun too. Only study 1-2 hours per credit hour a week (that includes homework). Devote the rest of your free time to yourself.

2. Kill two birds with one stone. A good stress reliever and way to lose weight is exercise.

3. Take notes. Discover what your bad eating habits are and change them. Journals are good (Yuck more homework!) You start to make better life choices when you don’t have to write it all down. Besides 1-3 pounds/week weight loss is healthy. Anything more than that is wrong. I have learned that there is no quick fix.

4. Don’t diet. Quite unlike all work and no play (see #1) completely depriving oneself of simple pleasures will only lead you back into the rut you are trying to get yourself out of. Everything in moderation. You made a life choice to go to college and better your mind and future. Make one about your body too.

Hope it helps. Good luck!
